Beef & Broccoli Stir-Fry
This is the takeout order you make at home for about $2.59 a serving, with a sauce built from soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and a spoonful of cornstarch to thicken it. Ground beef is not the traditional cut, but at Kirkwood prices it is the affordable way to get the same savory, glossy result — and it browns in five minutes with no slicing. The broccoli steams in the same pan with two tablespoons of water, then everything gets tossed over high heat for a minute and spooned over rice. Twenty-five minutes start to finish, one pan plus a rice pot, roughly $10.34 for four. Better than the delivery version.

Steps
- 1Cook the rice so it's ready to serve. Cut the broccoli into small florets.
- 2Whisk the soy sauce with 1 tbsp cornstarch, the minced garlic, and grated ginger to make a sauce.
- 3Brown the ground beef in a large skillet or wok over high heat, breaking it up, 5–6 minutes; drain.
- 4Add the broccoli and 2 tbsp water; cover and steam 3 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp.
- 5Pour in the sauce and toss everything over high heat 1 minute until glossy and thickened.
- 6Serve hot over the rice.
Tips & swaps
- Shaved beef or thin-sliced steak can replace the ground beef — cook it fast and do not crowd the pan.
- Frozen broccoli florets work; add them with a tablespoon more water.
- A teaspoon of honey or brown sugar in the sauce balances the soy sauce.
- Serve over noodles instead of rice, or over cauliflower rice to keep it lighter.
